Valuable Laptop/Notebook Tips

Always keep notebooks off the floor. While on the floor, notebooks are easily stepped on, children may play with then, etc.

Always use a surge protector. A power surge can happen at any time and ultimately may damage your notebook.

Don't keep paper in between the screen and the keypad. Paper can scratch the screen.

Never leave your notebook in a cold environment.

When you bring your notebook back into from the cold, condensation will form on the inside of the notebook and may cause electrical shortages within the device itself. Make sure when you bring it in from the cold you give it adequate time to dry out and warm up.

Don't place your notebook on soft surfaces. This will impede airflow and can result in overheating.  Heat may not kill your notebook right away, but it degrades the internal components rapidly.  Make sure that fan intake and exaust are not blocked.

Don't let it fall out of your carrying case or bag. A good leather case with separate compartments is the safest way to carry your notebook. Make sure you zip the case closed or close the bag it's in so that when it's picked up it stays put.

Never drink liquids around your notebook. Serious damage may result from even a small amount of liquid infiltrating your system. If the worst happens and you end up with a fizzy soft drink all over your keyboard (for instance), remove the battery and unplug the notebook immediately. Then take it in to cleaned and serviced immediately.

NEVER TRY TO FIX A NOTEBOOK YOURSELF! Notebooks have many small parts that were installed with high-pressure tools to make it sturdier and more reliable. If you fix it yourself and break a component, you have to pay for the replacement. On the other hand, if a computer repair shop happens to break a component, you're not liable.
